These paintings accompanied a short article entitled The Noble Savage by L Sprague de Camp dealing with primitive men in heroic situations. In this context primitive means without the benefits of technology (guns etc) rather than uncivilised. It is notable that all the paintings feature the use of swords, daggers or spears.
